Definitions
Organizational development is a planned effort to improve an organization's operations through a more effective utilization of organizational resources.
Effective organizational development begins with a solid organizational analysis-a systemic and objective process to define the context in which an organization operates, examine how people in an organization interact to achieve goals and assess the organization's capacity to adapt to its environment.
The organizational analysis is necessary to create the most appropriate organizational development strategies. Organizations that have the necessary structures, competencies, systems, practices and culture will succeed in reaching their goals and fully engaging their constituents-leading to long-term sustainability.

At Nonprofit Impact, our approach to organizational analysis goes beyond the traditional SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) or assessment of structure, systems and functioning. It is a comprehensive, holistic examination of the organizational system. It is diagnostic, seeking to identify root causes, not just symptoms.
Based on the analysis, we work with our clients to design the necessary practices, structure, systems, competencies and culture they need to succeed. We look for resources that will be sustainable over the long haul. We also coach clients through the change management process and help them develop systems to evaluate success.

- Sustainability analysis and planning: A more specific analysis and planning process for organization's seeking greater stability and sustainability. Analyzes an organization's identity, constituency and capacity; determines the feasibility of a sustainable operation and defines alternative models as necessary. Creates a blueprint that guides strategic, operational, and development decisions to create a more sustainable organization.
